Waste water involves all of the activities associated with the transporting and treatment of human waste streams. The transport aspects involves the movement of the waste through sewers, lift stations, etc., to a waste treatment plant. Like all biodegradable waste, large amounts of methane, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulphide can be produced. The primary hazards in this stage of the process are encountered during confined space entries in sewers. When the waste is collected at the treatment plants, the above hazards are even greater because large amounts of sewage have been collected in one place. Additional hazards are now present because highly toxic oxidising chemicals and gases such as Cl2, ClO2, and H2O2 are used to render the sewage harmless to be returned back into the environment.
